PET-CT
CANCER - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
1. Nuclear Medicine  >  5. PET-CT

PET-CT

A PET-CT scan combines a CT scan and a PET scan. It gives detailed information about your cancer.

The CT scan takes a series of x-rays from all around your body and puts them together to create a 3 dimensional (3D) picture.

The PET scan uses a mildly radioactive liquid (radioactive tracer) to show up areas of your body where cells are more active than normal.

The Importance of PET-CT in Diagnosing and Treating Various Cancers, Including Monitoring Targeted Therapy and Gene Therapy:

  • PET-CT is a powerful imaging tool that can detect cancer cells earlier than other imaging tests.
  • PET-CT can be used to diagnose a wide variety of cancers, including lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, lymphoma, and melanoma.
  • PET-CT can be used to stage cancer, which means determining the size and location of the tumor and whether it has spread to other parts of the body. This information is essential for planning treatment.
  • PET-CT can be used to monitor the response to cancer treatment and to detect recurrence of cancer after treatment.
  • PET-CT can be used to guide biopsy and surgery. This can help to ensure that the cancer cells are removed completely and that the patient has the best possible outcome.
  • PET-CT is a non-invasive procedure that is generally well-tolerated by patients.
  • PET-CT has been shown to improve the accuracy of cancer diagnosis and staging, which can lead to better treatment outcomes.
  • PET-CT can help to reduce the need for unnecessary surgery and other invasive procedures.
  • PET-CT can help to improve the quality of life for cancer patients by providing them with information about their disease and by helping them to monitor the response to treatment.
  • PET-CT is a valuable tool for clinicians and patients alike. It is a powerful imaging tool that can help to improve the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of a wide variety of cancers, including targeted therapy and gene therapy.

How PET-CT Can Be Used to Monitor Targeted Therapy and Gene Therapy for Cancer

  • To assess target engagement: PET-CT can be used to see if the targeted therapy or gene therapy is actually binding to the cancer cells. This is important because it can help to predict whether the therapy will be effective.
  • To monitor the response to treatment: PET-CT can be used to see how the cancer cells are responding to targeted therapy or gene therapy. This can be done by measuring the metabolic activity of the tumor cells. A decrease in metabolic activity can indicate that the treatment is effective.
  • To detect recurrence of cancer: PET-CT can be used to detect recurrence of cancer after targeted therapy or gene therapy. This is important because it can help to ensure that the cancer is caught early and treated effectively.

Examples of How PET-CT Is Being Used to Monitor Targeted Therapy and Gene Therapy for Cancer

  • PET-CT is being used to monitor the response to EGFR inhibitors in patients with lung cancer.
  • PET-CT is being used to monitor the response to CAR T-cell therapy in patients with leukemia and lymphoma.
  • PET-CT is being used to detect recurrence of cancer in patients who have been treated with targeted therapy or gene therapy.

Overall, PET-CT is a valuable tool for monitoring targeted therapy and gene therapy for cancer. It can be used to assess target engagement, monitor the response to treatment, and detect recurrence of cancer. This information can help clinicians to make better decisions about the treatment of their patients.
